"Where are the women?"

There's now an interview with the women who dressed as Batgirl who was totally a terrible bully and asked such controversial questions as "Where are the women?" and "Who would like to see a well-written female character?" over at DCWomenKickingAss.

She was brushed off by fan, creator and publisher alike. It's worth noting that Gail Simone gave her some very good answers when they spoke in private, I feel better about her than I did during that interview she had with someone about Batgirl, like she wasn't quite so keen on toeing the company line. I dunno, though.

Anyway, please do check it out.

warning for misogyny

Ugh, might want to put up a warning about reading the disqus-powered comments on that entry. There's some major mansplaining going on. See icon for my reaction.

Speaking of mansplaining, was anybody else in the audience at either of those two panels? Some guy near me in the Justice League panel was actually constantly quipping with ~*progressive*~ gems such as "Who does she think she's fooling? It's not like women read comics anyway" and "Who cares about Power Girl as long as we get to see her t*ts?" I wish I had figured out which of the guys in front of me it was saying that so I could have told him to shut up. I can't remember the last time I've been in a room that felt that outright hostile to women. Normally I'm pretty OK at comic and anime events but that one... it crossed the line and then tried to erase the line with C4.

I feel like an Old Fan but I'm not surprised to hear she'd only been in comics fandom a few years, it takes a while to be beaten back down and sit quietly in our designated corner and shut up while the Real Fans are talking.

People coming in from more female/non-straight/non-white friendly fandoms would naturally look at the race/gender/sexuality ratios in comics industry or fandom and ask out loud, 'what's going on here? is this normal?' not knowing that they would get a best blank glares and at worst (especially online) threats on their safety.

It's depressing we're in for another round of this from the beginning, I thought we'd started to change things. :(

Have to say as well, I feel massively privileged to have the comics shops that we do here (Melbourne, OZ) I've only ever felt unwelcome in one, there are at least three others and the one I have a pull-list at are beyond fantastic.

What an excellent interview! Any of those possible responses would have been so much better from Dan Didio.

That was a great interview, thanks for the link. I have to say though, I went though a brief period of being interested in comics but I have read so much crap about the industry since then I have completely lost interest.

That woman was awesome.

I already had a low opionon of Didio for some of his decisions, but this just confirms the fact that he's a jerkass. This also confirms for the most part that my buying comics this year will mostly be trades.
